Our Mission is


North Country Independent Living is a non-profit agency servicing people with disabilities in northwestern Wisconsin. As a consumer controlled organization, at least 51% of our staff and board are people with disabilities.  North Country staff provides information, training and support to people with disabilities in making informed decisions about disability related needs. All services are consumer controlled, each individual decides which services they wish to participate in while working with staff to establish goals and determine steps to meet those goals.

North Country Independent Living is the regional Center for Independent Living (CIL) serving Ashland, Bayfield, Burnett, Douglas, Iron, Price, Sawyer and Washburn Counties as well as the Bad River, Red Cliff, Lac Courte Oreillies, and the St. Croix Tribal Communities. CILs are consumer controlled, community based, cross disability, nonresidential private nonprofit agencies designed and operated in our local communities by individuals with disabilities to maximize their ability to live independently.

Board of Directors

Did you know North Country’s board of directors and staff are comprised of at least 51% people with disabilities? It is part of our way to ensure consumer control of the organization. We strongly believe that the lessons we learn from our disability experience provides valuable information to other consumers. We also like to have geographic representation. We have Parents, Native Americans, City Counselors, Bankers, Community Advocates, etc serving.

Board members set policy for the organization and attend quarterly board meetings in Superior, participate in committee meetings, training opportunities, etc. It is a volunteer board but we do reimburse for expenses. It is a lot for work but also fun and has many opportunities.

North Country Independent Living is taking measures to protect staff members, consumers, and community members due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.  North Country will adjust the way services are provided to consumers and the community. The following measures will be in effect until further notice.

The North Country office will be closed to the public, however, you can still contact us by phone at 715-392-9118 or Toll free at 800-924-1220 or by e-mail at info@northcountryil.org.

No meetings or events will be held at the agency office.

No in-person services will be provided. Appointments/meetings  may be changed to a phone, e-mail, or video conferencing.

Personal Care services will still be provided and proper precautions are being taken to protect personal care workers and consumers.

No community meetings or events will be attended by agency personnel.

No in-person assistive technology services will be provided, including in-person demonstrations and loans. No assistive technology donations will be accepted at this time.

Staff members will be working remotely and checking phone and email messages regularly.
